Role overview
This role leads mechanical design and development of next-generation, mission-critical hardware for public safety communications, taking products from concept through high-volume production. The position is a founding member of a new hardware team building compact, ruggedized, wireless-connected devices carried and relied on by emergency responders every day. Work spans the full mechanical development lifecycle, partnering closely with industrial design, electrical engineering, RF, product management, and manufacturing teams.
Responsibilities
- Own mechanical design from concept through mass production for compact, ruggedized, wireless-connected devices - Develop components and assemblies using plastic injection molding, stamped metal, die casting, machining, adhesives, and bonded joints - Design for demanding field environments, including drop, shock, vibration, long-term durability, and IP66/IP68 dust and water ingress protection - Integrate antennas, RF systems, batteries, PCBs, and flex circuits while balancing RF performance, EMI/EMC shielding, and passive thermal management - Build proof-of-concept prototypes and validate designs through FEA, tolerance analysis, and physical testing - Partner with vendors, consultants, and manufacturers to drive DFM/DFA and support engineering builds through EVT, DVT, PVT, certification, and ramp
Requirements
- 12+ years of mechanical product design experience with ruggedized, portable, or wearable electronic products, including concept through high-volume manufacturing - 5+ years of technical leadership, including directing teams of 3+ mechanical engineers - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience - Deep experience with plastic injection-molded, stamped metal, die-cast, machined, adhesive, and bonded assemblies - Strong proficiency in Creo or comparable 3D CAD software - Hands-on experience designing to MIL-STD-810 and IP66/IP68 ruggedization standards
Nice to have
- Background integrating antennas, keep-out zones, RF-transparent materials, and FCC/IC certification requirements - Experience designing for carry and wear ergonomics, including belt-, holster-, or body-mounted form factors and one-handed operation - Familiarity resolving tradeoffs between aesthetics, durability, sealing, thermal, RF, and manufacturability
