Remote job
Mission Engineer II - Pinellas County FL Sheriff's Office
Job details
About this role
Role overview This is an embedded, onsite technical ownership role based full-time at a county sheriff's office. The engineer partners directly with frontline staff, technical teams, and agency leadership to understand operational challenges, then designs and ships working software, automation, and data solutions against them. Success is measured by what gets built, adopted, and sustained—not by activity volume—and the position blends hands-on engineering with technical liaison work across product, deployment, and support functions.
Responsibilities - Spend extended time embedded with the assigned agency to map its mission, workflows, systems, and priorities, working alongside the people doing the actual work. - Translate observed operational friction into clear technical requirements and measurable success criteria, identifying where AI, automation, and data tools can make a difference. - Build applications, dashboards, workflows, and automations on top of the agency's deployed technology ecosystem, applying sound software engineering practices including APIs, data structures, scripting, testing, debugging, and version control. - Shepherd solutions from prototype through real customer use, testing iteratively with end users, driving adoption, and refining until outcomes are durable. - Serve as the agency's go-to technical resource, maintaining a consistent onsite presence, helping coordinate complex deployments and technical issues, and routing the right specialists into the conversation when deeper expertise is required. - Document successful solutions so they can be maintained, reused, and improved by others.
Requirements - Three to five or more years in solutions engineering, software engineering, systems, technical consulting, implementation engineering, or a comparable hands-on technical role. - Demonstrated ability to build working technical solutions, with working knowledge of APIs, scripting or programming, data, testing, debugging, and modern development practices. - Practical understanding of AI concepts and how they apply to real problems, plus the curiosity to learn new platforms and tools quickly. - Strong communication skills and comfort working with both technical and non-technical audiences, with a customer-facing mindset and genuine curiosity about how organizations operate. - Ability to solve ambiguous, open-ended problems rather than execute predefined tasks. - Eligibility to obtain and maintain CJIS compliance and satisfy the agency's background requirements, and willingness to maintain a five-day onsite presence at the sheriff's office.
Nice to have - Experience with Python, JavaScript, SQL, REST APIs, cloud platforms, or modern frameworks. - Familiarity with AI platforms, workflow automation, low-code development, or data tooling. - Prior background in public safety, defense, military, intelligence, government, or other mission-critical environments.
