Senior Systems Engineer

Role overview

A senior engineering role on a small, vertically integrated infrastructure team responsible for a globally distributed footprint that serves tens of billions of monthly page views. Responsibilities

- Maximize availability and uptime of all services through proactive planning, sound architectural decisions, automation, and rapid response to failures. - Optimize latency and throughput across server- and client-side interactions, working with third-party providers where needed to keep services fast for end users. - Protect user and employee data through monitoring, real-time response, backups, and disaster-recovery practices that preserve data integrity. - Remove friction between application developers and shipping software, answering technical questions quickly and unblocking teams as they deploy. - Autonomously architect, prototype, and maintain infrastructure solutions for a diverse set of hosting requirements at massive scale.

Requirements

- Deep experience maintaining very large Nginx setups with advanced routing, load balancing, and high availability. - Operational experience running large MySQL or MariaDB deployments with strong performance, uptime, and data integrity. - Comfortable running and debugging PHP applications at scale, and understanding their relationship to the underlying systems stack, including filesystems, networking, memory management, and kernel internals. - Track record operating and maintaining complex, public-facing web hosting systems. - Extreme attention to detail and a drive for operational excellence. - Open to roughly two to three weeks of in-person team travel per year.
