About this role
Role overview The GIS Systems Architect will shape scalable, resilient geospatial architectures for federal government programs. This remote technical leadership position combines systems engineering, cloud architecture, geospatial data management, and stakeholder collaboration while maintaining compliance with federal security, management, and accessibility requirements.
Responsibilities - Design, develop, and maintain interoperable geospatial architectures aligned with DHS standards and program objectives. - Assess current capabilities through gap analysis, then define technical and functional requirements for geospatial solutions. - Lead systems integration and architecture decisions across cloud, hybrid cloud, and on-premises environments. - Manage geodatabases, metadata, data warehouses, and cloud-based repositories for geospatial information. - Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize GIS applications, databases, and supporting infrastructure. - Validate system performance with test plans and maintain architectural documentation, standard operating procedures, technical guides, and related artifacts.
Requirements - Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, geospatial science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. - Demonstrated experience as a systems architect or similar technical role supporting geospatial systems in government or large enterprise settings. - Strong knowledge of systems engineering, enterprise architecture, and GIS technologies, particularly Esri products. - Experience with AWS, Azure, or GovCloud, including hybrid cloud architecture and enterprise data storage solutions. - Proficiency in database design and management, including geodatabases and spatial data repositories, with knowledge of federal security frameworks such as FISMA, Section 508, and DHS management directives. - Familiarity with the software development lifecycle, DevSecOps, CI/CD, automation or scripting for deployment, and effective communication across diverse teams.
Nice to have - Experience supporting DHS geospatial programs or comparable federal initiatives. - Familiarity with the DHS Geospatial Information Infrastructure, GeoPlatform, or HIFLD standards. - Hands-on experience with AWS GovCloud or hybrid cloud GIS migrations. - Prior technical mentoring or leadership in a government contracting environment, plus an active security clearance or eligibility for federal clearance.
