System Administrator

Role overview A mid-level Linux-focused system administrator role supporting mission-critical systems and lab infrastructure for a federal research laboratory. The administrator manages hardware and software stacks, enforces cybersecurity standards, and automates recurring operations in a high-performance environment.

Responsibilities - Manage and maintain lab environments for optimal performance, availability, and scalability - Design, configure, and maintain Linux operating systems - Manage LAN/WAN system requirements - Implement and maintain cybersecurity protocols across software, operating systems, and networks - Apply encryption standards and protocols to secure sensitive data and communications - Develop and maintain automation scripts using Bash, PowerShell, Ansible, or Python - Support software builds and version control using Git, aligning with evolving government and end-user requirements - Translate complex technical requirements into actionable plans and communicate clearly across teams - Collaborate with cross-functional teams in fast-paced environments to deliver reliable and secure system solutions

Requirements - Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field - 5-7 years of hands-on Linux system administration experience (Master's 3-5, PhD 0-2 also acceptable) - Extensive experience with hardware and software infrastructure components - In-depth knowledge of security practices and protocols including firewalls, encryption, and access controls - Working knowledge of DoD security standards such as STIGs - Familiarity with scripting and automation tools - Demonstrated success managing technical delivery on government or defense-related projects - Strong verbal and written communication skills - Active US Secret DoD clearance with the ability to obtain a TS

Nice to have - Proficiency with hypervisors such as VMware or Proxmox and container technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes - Scripting expertise in Python or Bash for automation - Prior DoD contracting experience and familiarity with federal research lab environments
