Embedded Linux Software Developer

Role overview An embedded systems engineering role building and optimizing secure Linux-based platforms for a federal defense research setting. The work spans Yocto-based distribution customization, kernel and driver development, and cross-team hardware/software integration for innovative embedded devices.

Responsibilities - Develop and maintain embedded Linux systems tailored to specialized applications - Design, implement, and debug software components using Linux technologies - Customize and build Linux distributions via Yocto Project, OpenEmbedded, or comparable frameworks - Integrate open-source and proprietary software into embedded platforms - Advise on embedded Linux best practices including configuration, kernel optimization, and security - Collaborate with hardware engineers to validate hardware and software integration - Conduct system profiling, performance analysis, and stability debugging - Produce technical documentation and provide lifecycle support

Requirements - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent - 5+ years of relevant experience (BS 5–7, MS 3–5, PhD 0–2) - Proven track record developing embedded Linux solutions - Hands-on experience with Yocto Project, OpenEmbedded, or similar build systems - Strong C/C++ programming in Linux environments - Deep understanding of Linux kernel internals, device drivers, and board bring-up - Proficiency with Git and version control workflows - Solid grasp of OS concepts, memory management, and IPC - Active DOD SECRET clearance with ability to obtain TS

Nice to have - Familiarity with Docker or Podman container tooling - Exposure to Wind River Linux or other commercial embedded distributions - Real-time or low-latency Linux configuration experience - Scripting skills in Python or Bash for automation - Understanding of network protocols and embedded security concepts
