Role overview

A part-time remote internship supporting a Data Science team focused on machine learning and artificial intelligence. The role centres on large language models (LLMs), generative AI, and agentic AI applied to clinical, biomedical, and operational research use cases. Interns will gain hands-on experience building reproducible AI-enabled workflows and learning how to evaluate, validate, and document LLM-based solutions in a healthcare research setting.

Responsibilities

- Support the design and development of LLM-powered applications and agentic AI workflows for research use cases. - Apply LLMs to modelling and analytical tasks such as information extraction, classification, summarisation, question answering, and workflow orchestration. - Experiment with prompting, structured outputs, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, vector search, and multi-step agent workflows. - Prepare, clean, and document datasets used in LLM and generative AI experiments. - Develop reproducible prototypes in Python and approved AI/ML tools. - Design evaluations of LLM systems using defined criteria and analyse errors, robustness, hallucination, bias, and reproducibility concerns.

Requirements

- Currently pursuing an MS or PhD in Computer Science, AI, Biomedical Informatics, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, Public Health, or a related quantitative field. - Coursework or project experience with LLMs, generative AI, NLP, retrieval-augmented generation, or AI agents. - Programming experience in Python with common data analysis or machine learning libraries. - Understanding of core LLM concepts including tokens, context windows, embeddings, prompting, retrieval, and generation. - Strong analytical, organisational, and documentation skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams. - Minimum 20 hours per week, Monday–Friday between 8:30am and 5pm, with reliable WiFi. - Must be legally authorised to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Nice to have

- Experience with cloud or high-performance computing environments such as AWS, Azure, GCP, or Snowflake. - Familiarity with model evaluation, experimental design, version control, or reproducible workflow practices. - Experience working with healthcare, clinical, or biomedical datasets.

Benefits and work setup
