Job details
About this role
Role overview Join a Consumer Authentication Platform team as a Senior Backend Software Engineer focused on building the secure, reliable authentication layer that connects millions of users to consumer financial products. This is a high-impact role spanning identity, security, and platform engineering, where the work directly influences sign-up, sign-in, account recovery, and checkout experiences across thousands of merchants and multiple countries.
Responsibilities
- Lead the technical design and delivery of significant authentication platform capabilities, from early requirements and architecture through implementation, rollout, and ongoing operations. - Build secure, highly available services for sign-in, authentication factors, step-up challenges, session management, authorization, and identity federation. - Collaborate with Product, Security, Fraud, Compliance, Design, and Analytics to translate security, regulatory, fraud, and customer-experience requirements into pragmatic technical designs. - Champion quality and security by setting code review and design standards, mentoring peers, and leading by example through design reviews and hands-on collaboration. - Operate and maintain production services through monitoring, metrics, on-call rotations, and post-incident systemic improvements. - Communicate technical decisions, risks, and trade-offs clearly to both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python, Kotlin, Java, or a comparable modern language. - Proven track record building highly available distributed systems on cloud infrastructure, relational databases, event-driven architectures, and API or RPC frameworks. - Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components with secure, scalable, and elegant designs. - Strong cross-functional communication skills and the ability to navigate trade-offs between security, compliance, fraud prevention, friction, and delivery speed.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with authentication protocols and standards such as OAuth, OIDC, SAML, WebAuthn/passkeys, FIDO2, JWTs, and public-key cryptography. - Knowledge of frameworks like the NIST Digital Identity Guidelines or PCI DSS. - Experience with session management, token issuance, account recovery, multi-factor authentication, or risk-based and adaptive authentication.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote-first role open to candidates residing in specific Canadian provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan). - Total compensation includes base pay, equity, and monthly stipends for health, wellness, and technology spending. - Benefits include fully subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents, flexible time off, generous holidays, and an employee stock purchase plan. - Pay range listed in the source as $153,000 – $213,000 CAD per year for Canada-based candidates.
