Manager, Software Engineering (Marketplace Performance)

Role overview

A leadership role on a marketplace performance team building a first-of-its-kind advertising platform for a consumer payments and shopping destination. The position combines technical strategy, hands-on engineering influence, and people management across monetization-focused initiatives. The right candidate will set the technical direction for backend systems at scale while partnering closely with product, design, and analytics counterparts.

Responsibilities

- Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long horizon and connect it to critical, business-impacting projects - Collaborate across product, design, and analytics to manage technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs - Define and advocate for technical solutions and operational processes that multiply team impact - Own operational reliability, including monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, testing, and alerting - Establish code review and design standards, fostering a culture of quality and ownership - Develop team talent through feedback, mentorship, and leading by example

Requirements

- 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale in Python or Kotlin - Track record building highly available distributed systems using technologies such as AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes - Experience developing consumer-facing experiences with UI frameworks like React - 2+ years in ad tech or related platform environments - Demonstrated ability to deliver major features or deprecate existing functionality through a defined technical and execution plan - Comfortable moving between low-level language idioms and large-system architecture - Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaborating across a global engineering team - Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field
