Role overview

This freelance Data Scientist position is based remotely in Sydney and is structured around approximately 10 hours of work per week. The role sits at the intersection of predictive modeling and production engineering, supporting retail optimization initiatives for clients in the region while partnering with a core engineering team based in Berlin. The successful candidate will act as the dedicated regional data science owner, ensuring that AI-driven decision systems remain mathematically sound, well-optimized, and operationally resilient.

Responsibilities

- Apply analytical skills to support retail optimization projects across the local market - Design and run machine learning experiments focused on forecasting sales volume and associated costs - Act as a primary technical contact with retail partners, gathering feedback and continuously improving the software product - Partner closely with the core engineering team to translate real-world retail challenges into scalable, high-performance solutions - Maintain and optimize data pipelines alongside the predictive model codebases - Monitor, measure, and explore large-scale datasets to surface insights and identify improvement opportunities

Requirements

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related quantitative field - At least three years of experience working as a Data Scientist, including independent engagement with external customers - Hands-on background in machine learning and applied data science with a pragmatic, results-oriented mindset - Working knowledge of Git, TensorFlow, Google Cloud Platform, SQL, and/or BigQuery - Strong project management capabilities with a track record of explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences - Professional working proficiency in English (minimum C1 level) and current residency in Sydney

Nice to have
