Remote job
Staff PHP/Symphony Software Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Lead the hands-on modernization of business-critical applications built on legacy PHP. The role combines Staff-level architectural direction with direct engineering work: understanding existing business rules, stabilizing critical workflows, and moving functionality incrementally toward a maintainable, scalable system.
Responsibilities
- Define pragmatic migration plans, system boundaries, and API contracts that support modernization while protecting business continuity. - Debug production issues, improve reliability, and refactor high-risk areas of complex PHP applications. - Investigate undocumented rules around contracts, commissions, rights, and payments, then shape them into modular designs. - Build and guide integrations across PHP and modern services or frontends, including Symfony, Node.js, Next.js, microservices, and BFF patterns. - Set API direction using approaches such as REST, GraphQL, and API gateways; explain technical trade-offs and risks to business and engineering partners. - Use AI-assisted coding tools in daily development and identify ways to improve engineering speed and workflows; mentor and support additional engineers as the work grows.
Requirements
- Staff- or Lead-level engineering experience, with the judgment to set technical direction independently while remaining hands-on. - Strong experience maintaining, debugging, and safely refactoring legacy PHP applications, including Symfony or native PHP. - Full-stack experience and practical familiarity with Symfony, Node.js, Next.js, and modern API design. - A track record of incrementally modernizing legacy systems while maintaining service continuity and managing technical risk. - Ability to uncover complex or undocumented business logic and turn it into clear, maintainable software designs. - Regular hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools for coding, debugging, refactoring, research, or technical analysis.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with talent, entertainment, agency management, rights management, or related platforms.
