Senior Software Developer, Book of Record (Core Balances)
Job details
About this role
Role overview This is a senior backend role on a small, high-trust team that owns the services at the heart of how a financial platform tracks client money. You will design and build the systems that record balances, reserve assets, and capture financial activity in real time, sitting on the critical path for nearly every product in the ecosystem. The work is consequential, backend-heavy, and focused on systems that must be both fast and correct under heavy load.
Responsibilities - Design, build, and operate the backend services that power real-time balances, reservations, and financial activity. - Own meaningful scope end-to-end, from technical design through running the work reliably in production. - Solve hard problems around real-time correctness, low latency, and high availability, including write paths that cannot be slow, event consumers that cannot fall behind, and database contention that surfaces at peak volume. - Evolve the architecture in place by consolidating overlapping services and data models, establishing a single entry point for financial activity, and isolating failure domains so one slow calculation cannot degrade the rest of the system. - Make recovery and backfill fast and safe on live financial systems without downtime or incorrect client-visible numbers. - Raise the bar on quality and operational excellence through thoughtful design, code review, and strong production ownership. - Mentor and grow engineers around you through pairing, code review, and in-the-moment feedback. - Use AI-assisted tooling to ship faster and more safely as part of how the team works.
Requirements - 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of building and operating critical production systems that people or businesses depend on. - Strong backend engineering skills and sound judgment about system design, reliability, and trade-offs. - Solid experience building highly available, low-latency services and the instincts that come from having kept one running under real load. - Strong JVM experience, ideally with Kotlin, with Java experience translating well; Kafka and GraphQL are part of the stack. - A serious approach to production ownership and the ability to stay calm and methodical when things go wrong. - Comfort working in a mature codebase, finding footing in systems with history, and improving them incrementally. - Strong software quality habits: well-tested, maintainable, observable code, with reviews that lift the people and codebase around you. - Clear, steady communication, comfort working with product and other engineering teams, and the habit of sharing context early. - Curiosity about the "why" behind systems, including the discipline to tell the difference between code that is just old and code that is genuinely wrong. - Detail orientation balanced with the bigger picture, with deep care for correctness and the client experience on the other side. - A collaborative, generous mindset and a curiosity for new ideas and ways of working.
Benefits and work setup - Top-tier health benefits and life insurance. - Long-term group savings with employer match. - 20 vacation days, 4 wellness days, and unlimited sick and mental health days per year. - Option to work outside the country for up to 90 days per year. - Employee resource groups and a hybrid team structure across North America. - Equal opportunity employer with a stated commitment to accessible hiring practices.
