Remote job
Engineering Manager - Platform
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Lead a globally distributed platform engineering team that builds and runs the internal infrastructure, tooling, and automation powering engineering organisation-wide. This is a hands-on technical leadership role during a period of platform modernisation: upgrading tooling, raising the automation ceiling, and standardising how software ships at scale. The mission is to grow engineers while delivering reliable platforms that hundreds of developers depend on daily.
Responsibilities
- Manage and provide technical leadership for a distributed team of platform engineers across multiple regions and time zones. - Write and review production code, contribute to architecture decisions, and participate directly in the on-call rotation alongside the team. - Execute the platform roadmap in partnership with senior engineering and product leadership, keeping complex multi-team initiatives unblocked. - Coach engineers transitioning from SRE and infrastructure backgrounds into product-oriented platform engineering, with emphasis on ownership and customer-first thinking. - Coordinate large-scale cross-team initiatives such as Kubernetes upgrades, tooling migrations, and security hardening that affect the wider engineering organisation. - Define and track SLAs, error budgets, KPIs, and change failure rates, using data to prioritise work and communicate platform health. - Ensure platform work satisfies compliance and regulatory requirements without sacrificing delivery velocity.
Requirements
- At least two years of engineering management experience leading platform, DevOps, or SRE teams. - A strong hands-on engineering background, with a track record of personally shipping production code and owning systems end to end. - Solid understanding of AWS services and how they underpin enterprise platform infrastructure. - Proven ability to grow engineers through skill transitions, particularly from operational roles into product-oriented platform work. - A dependency-unblocking mindset, with experience driving cross-team commitments and keeping complex deliverables on track. - Data-driven approach to platform management, comfortable defining and tracking SLAs, KPIs, error budgets, and change failure rates. - Familiarity with compliance and security constraints in regulated environments, treating them as guardrails rather than blockers. - Strong leadership instincts, including setting clear expectations, giving direct feedback, and building psychological safety.
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with Internal Developer Platform products such as Port.io or OpsLevel. - Familiarity with GitOps tooling like ArgoCD, Crossplane, or Kyverno. - AWS and/or Kubernetes certifications. - Experience operating within CFIUS-regulated or comparably complex compliance environments.
Benefits and work setup
- Private medical insurance with the option to add dependents. - Multisport gym membership. - Educational assistance reimbursement programme. - Monthly lunch-and-learn sessions. - Reimbursement for conferences, trainings, and personal-development events aligned with the role. - Three paid volunteer days per year. - Unlimited discretionary time off. - Additional maternity and paternity leave beyond standard offerings.
