About this role
Role overview A virtual obesity care provider is hiring a Backend Software Engineer II to help build the data platform that powers much of its business. The team turns partner data into reliable information used across products and operations, including member identity, eligibility, billing, partner integrations, and the data foundations behind reporting and analytics. The role focuses on backend services and data-intensive systems, primarily in Python, taking features from design through production and growing toward independently owning services and technical decisions.
Responsibilities
- Build backend services that ingest, validate, reconcile, and serve data from external partners such as health plans and employers. - Develop systems supporting member identity, eligibility, billing, and other core business domains. - Design APIs, asynchronous workflows, and data pipelines used across the organization. - Make systems resilient to incomplete, duplicated, delayed, and inconsistent real-world data, including safe retry, replay, and recovery mechanisms. - Improve the reliability, observability, testing, and performance of production systems. - Collaborate with engineering, product, and operations teams to scope work when requirements are incomplete or ambiguous.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree at a minimum. - 2+ years of professional experience building backend software. - Strong programming fundamentals, with Python as the primary language. - Experience with relational databases and SQL. - Experience building systems that process, transform, or move significant amounts of data. - Solid understanding of testing, debugging, APIs, and common distributed-system failure modes, plus experience deploying or operating software in a cloud environment. - Good instincts around correctness, including validation, idempotency, retries, and edge cases. - Ability to navigate an unfamiliar codebase and improve it without adding complexity. - Clear written communication and the ability to explain technical decisions and tradeoffs.
Nice to have
- Data-intensive backend systems, ETL/ELT pipelines, or event-driven architectures. - PostgreSQL, analytical warehouses, or data modeling experience. - Infrastructure as code, containers, or workflow orchestration. - Background in identity resolution, entity matching, eligibility, claims, or other healthcare data. - Experience in regulated or security-sensitive production environments.
Benefits and work setup
- Listed compensation range: $120,000–$130,000 per year. - Remote position within the U.S.; applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. with no visa sponsorship available. - Healthcare background is not required, and experience with every technology listed is not expected.
