About this role
Role overview
A digital-skills learning platform is hiring independent contractor mentors to support learners in an advanced software architecture curriculum. The role focuses on guiding students through complex systems design topics via virtual office hours, community forums, and weekly live sessions. It is a part-time, fully remote opportunity designed for working professionals who can teach alongside their primary employment.
Responsibilities
- Respond to learner questions in an online community forum, helping unblock students on course material and exercises. - Host one live virtual session each week to provide real-time technical guidance and architectural feedback. - Curate and facilitate discussion content that reinforces core systems-design concepts. - Escalate learner issues and route them to the appropriate operational support channels when needed. - Stay current with emerging technologies so guidance reflects modern architectural practice.
Requirements
- At least five years of professional industry experience, or a master's degree combined with equivalent practical work. - Strong expertise in test-driven development, including Pytest, scalable test strategy design, and structured test suite organization. - Deep understanding of creational, structural, and behavioral design patterns and their production use. - Hands-on experience designing microservices, multitier, cloud-native, and serverless architectures. - Working knowledge of caching strategies, CDN architecture, distributed systems, and data storage tradeoffs. - Demonstrated ability to teach technical concepts, such as through public talks, webinars, or technical workshops. - Fluency in written and spoken English. - Residence in a supported timezone spanning the US/Canada, Europe, MENA, India, or APAC regions. - Flexibility to balance this part-time contract alongside a current full-time role.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with architectural frameworks such as TOGAF, Zachman, or SysML, plus a strong grasp of the full software development lifecycle. - Background in systems engineering, including requirements analysis, validation, and system integration. - Exposure to machine learning system architectures. - Prior mentoring, coaching, or community-of-practice leadership experience.
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote, part-time independent contractor engagement with flexible scheduling. - Opportunity to engage with a global learner community while supplementing primary income. - No relocation or fixed office hours; sessions delivered virtually on a weekly cadence.
