About this role
Role overview A fully remote opportunity for a Staff AI Engineer to shape the technical direction of an AI-driven research platform that helps organizations design studies, run AI-moderated conversations, and synthesize qualitative insights at scale. The role is a hands-on individual contributor position with cross-team influence, focused on turning experimental AI capabilities into dependable production systems. You will guide architecture, evaluation, and reliability work spanning generative AI, retrieval systems, and scalable cloud infrastructure.
Responsibilities - Partner with Product and Engineering leaders to translate product ambitions into a clear technical direction and delivery priorities - Lead architectural decisions across AI-assisted study design, adaptive conversational flows, and research synthesis - Take ownership of ambiguous AI problems, from framing and prototyping through production delivery and operations - Design and build generative AI applications using large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, vector search, tool use, and agentic workflows - Guide the architecture of machine learning services using Python, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS, including batch and real-time pipelines - Establish patterns for retrieval, model orchestration, experiment management, and observability while resolving performance, reliability, and cost bottlenecks - Build reusable services and APIs that let product teams deliver AI capabilities consistently
Requirements - Significant experience building and operating machine learning or AI systems in production, with evidence of technical leadership beyond your own projects - Track record leading complex engineering initiatives across teams, from ambiguous requirements to measurable outcomes - Strong Python and software engineering skills, with the ability to contribute directly to production code - Experience designing production services and APIs using frameworks such as FastAPI - Practical experience building generative AI applications using large language models, RAG, tool use, or agentic systems - Strong understanding of enterprise RAG systems, including retrieval architecture, chunking, embeddings, reranking, evaluation, and monitoring - Experience with frameworks such as PyTorch, LangChain, LangGraph, or similar technologies - Strong experience designing and operating cloud systems using AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD practices - Experience with event-driven processing, vector databases, and ML lifecycle tools such as Kafka and MLflow - Sound judgement when balancing delivery speed, quality, reliability, scalability, security, and cost - Ability to influence technical decisions across teams and mentor engineers
Nice to have - Experience in B2B SaaS product environments - Experience building conversational AI, adaptive interviewing, or automated analysis and summarisation systems - Experience evolving shared AI infrastructure or platforms used by multiple product teams - Experience with orchestration tools such as Airflow or Argo Workflows - Familiarity with SQL, Spark, Snowflake, or comparable data processing technologies - Experience with AI security, privacy, responsible AI, prompt injection protection, or data leakage prevention - Experience materially improving latency, reliability, or cost of AI systems operating at scale
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote position, with hiring available in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Portugal, Spain, or the Netherlands - Opportunity to shape foundational AI systems used by hundreds of thousands of businesses worldwide - Collaborative culture grounded in respect, transparency, and trust - Equal-opportunity employer that celebrates diversity and prohibits discrimination of any kind
