Remote job
Senior Engineering Manager
Job details
About this role
Role overview
This senior engineering leadership role is focused on AI initiatives and blends hands-on technical work with team management in a fast-paced, startup-style environment. The position is explicitly not a pure people-management role — the leader is expected to operate directly on data, stand up infrastructure, and step in to personally deliver a project when no one else is available. It is built for someone energized by intensity, tight timelines, and a rapid iteration cadence rather than a slower, steadier management track.
Responsibilities
- Lead hands-on technical work: operate on data, organize the stack, set up cloud infrastructure, and serve as the technical fallback who can deliver a project end-to-end when needed. - Guide architecture, design, and implementation of scalable, maintainable codebases, and build and review AI agent-based output alongside human-written code. - Drive prompt and idea generation, prioritization, and experimentation to push product and process innovation. - Allocate work across pods based on skills and performance, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and keep delivery aligned with business goals. - Track team throughput using velocity and cycle time, run spot reviews on tasks, and adjust processes to maintain quality and surface risk early. - Identify high and low performers through reviews and metrics, provide mentorship and feedback, and support growth and advancement.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, Data Engineering, or a related field (electrical engineering also acceptable); an AI or data science background is a meaningful plus. - 7+ years of software development experience, plus leadership experience managing teams meaningfully larger than 5–6 engineers. - Proven track record leading teams through urgent, complex technical work in a startup setting and delivering on or ahead of schedule. - Expert-level, hands-on experience with Node.js, React, and NestJS, including ecosystem libraries and best practices. - Experience with Infrastructure as Code and GCP, including setting up and operating cloud infrastructure directly. - Hands-on experience with Python for data analysis, backend, or AI/ML work, and with JavaScript and TypeScript for front-end or full-stack development; proficiency with Pandas, NumPy, and SQL, and a strong focus on data quality.
Nice to have
- A history of ownership that exceeds formal role expectations, paired with high personal output and initiative. - Strong problem-solving skills, comfort with ambiguity in a fast-paced environment, and excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote, full-time position based in Brazil or Colombia. - Exposure to frontier AI research and datasets, with potential to publish or present at top industry conferences. - Startup-pace culture centered on speed, ownership, and direct impact, with a stated commitment to equal opportunity hiring and a diverse, inclusive workplace.
