About this role
Role overview A consumer fintech is hiring a Staff Applied AI Engineer to build the Capabilities Engine, the core platform powering reliable, observable, and production-ready agentic behavior across the product. The role sits inside a focused team working at the intersection of LLM-powered reasoning, deterministic execution systems, tool orchestration, and consumer-grade product craft. The goal is agents that can correctly, safely, and verifiably complete real work for customers across contact methods such as phone, email, chat, and web.
Responsibilities - Design and operate a reusable platform that makes capabilities easy for agents and contact methods to discover, invoke, compose, observe, and improve. - Partner with method-specific owners to make each channel more agentic and better integrated with the platform. - Identify repeated patterns across methods and turn them into reusable capabilities, interfaces, evaluations, and documentation. - Build practical evaluation loops including offline tests, production metrics, traces, regression suites, and qualitative review. - Debug complex failures spanning model behavior, tool execution, orchestration, product constraints, and downstream systems. - Translate ambiguous product needs into shippable technical plans, prototypes, and durable systems, then mentor other engineers across the group.
Requirements - Significant experience building and operating agentic or LLM-powered systems in production at scale. - Fluency with TypeScript, Node, GraphQL, Postgres, LLM applications, and workflow orchestration. - Hands-on experience designing evaluation and observability systems for probabilistic or agentic behavior. - A track record of improving reliability, alerting, tracing, incident response, and operational quality for production software. - Comfort partnering deeply with product, design, data, platform, operations, legal, and support teams in customer-sensitive domains. - Firsthand experience building products where customer trust, permissions, explainability, and recovery paths are central.
Benefits and work setup - Health, dental, and vision plans, competitive pay, 401k matching, and unlimited PTO. - In-office perks include daily lunch, snacks, coffee, and commuter benefits. - Salary range disclosed in the listing is $200,000 to $270,000 per year plus bonus and benefits.
