Senior Medical Imaging Software Engineer

Role overview A senior contract software engineer is needed to lead the design and build of a bespoke web platform for managing large-scale medical imaging datasets. The work supports critical research analysis and international collaboration with a research team based in Alberta, Canada, blending backend systems engineering with healthcare-grade web tooling.

Responsibilities - Architect and develop a web platform that ingests, organizes, views, and shares large medical imaging datasets, including DICOM and related formats. - Build high-performance backend services and data pipelines for imaging storage, indexing, and cross-institution distribution. - Implement and extend browser-based imaging viewers, integrating with open-source ecosystems such as OHIF Viewer and Cornerstone 3D. - Partner closely with clinicians and researchers to translate real research workflows into reliable, usable software features. - Apply security, privacy, and compliance practices appropriate for healthcare and research data. - Mentor teammates through design reviews, code reviews, and pair programming to raise overall engineering quality.

Requirements - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field. - 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong foundations in algorithms, data structures, and system architecture. - Expert-level proficiency in TypeScript or JavaScript and Python, with working knowledge of C or C++ for performance-critical imaging components. - Deep experience with modern web frameworks (React preferred; Angular or Vue also welcome) and backend stacks such as Node.js with Express. - Strong SQL skills with PostgreSQL or MySQL, plus familiarity with NoSQL stores such as MongoDB. - Hands-on experience with AWS or Google Cloud Platform, Docker-based deployment, and production observability tooling.

Nice to have - Direct experience with Cornerstone 3D and the Open Health Imaging Foundation (OHIF) Viewer. - Familiarity with the Kheops image-sharing platform or collaboration with specialist medical imaging software teams. - Understanding of high-level medical research workflows and international research consortia. - Knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards such as DICOM, HL7, and FHIR, along with compliance frameworks including HIPAA, PHIPA, PIPEDA, and FOIP.
