Staff Software Engineer, Web Application Services

Role overview A Staff-level individual contributor role on a Services team building web-based products that extend a well-known open-source email platform into new territory, including appointment scheduling and secure file storage and transfer. The position carries significant technical ownership, shaping architecture and direction while partnering with designers, engineers, and a global open-source community. It is well suited to a seasoned engineer who thrives in fully remote, distributed environments and enjoys both hands-on coding and high-level technical decision making.

Responsibilities - Drive the technical architecture and direction of web-based services beyond core email functionality. - Write production code, build prototypes, and make decisions that shape long-lived systems. - Take a holistic view of existing code and services, identifying refactors and architectural improvements. - Partner with product, design, and community contributors to translate user needs into scalable services. - Mentor and influence engineers across the team without formal people management responsibilities.

Requirements - Significant experience as a Senior Software Engineer or equivalent, with demonstrated Staff-level impact. - Deep experience designing and operating web software architecture and backend web services. - Strong proficiency in Python 3 and at least one additional modern programming language. - Proven track record of providing technical leadership on complex products or ambiguous problem spaces. - Comfort working effectively in a fully remote, globally distributed organization. - Professional experience with product-focused or product management-adjacent work.

Nice to have - Familiarity with privacy-respecting product design and open-source development practices. - Experience with AI-enabled tools applied to software development workflows. - Background contributing to or working alongside open-source communities.
