Engineering Lead

Role overview

An engineering lead is needed to combine hands-on coding with team leadership, owning technical delivery on complex client software projects from discovery through launch. The position is player-coach by design: expect substantial production code contributions alongside architecture, code review, planning, and client communication.

Responsibilities

- Write, test, review, and ship production code as a primary responsibility - Translate product and business goals into a clear technical direction for the engineering team - Lead delivery of client projects, identifying dependencies and addressing risks early - Review pull requests and pair with engineers to raise implementation quality - Mentor engineers while remaining individually accountable for deliverables - Step into critical parts of the codebase to unblock work and protect release commitments - Communicate progress, trade-offs, and risks to both technical and non-technical audiences - Contribute to the technical community through articles, events, podcasts, or open-source work

Requirements

- 10 or more years of professional software development experience - Recent, substantial hands-on production coding experience - Background as a player-coach balancing leadership with individual engineering contributions - Strong knowledge of modern JavaScript and TypeScript - Deep expertise in at least one modern web framework such as React, Angular, Vue, or Svelte - Solid grasp of architecture, testing, performance, security, and maintainability - Experience planning technical work, estimating delivery, and managing dependencies - Excellent written and verbal communication - Strong time management and ability to work independently in a remote setting

Nice to have

- Consulting or agency experience - Familiarity with Node.js, React Native, RxJS, or cloud platforms - CI/CD, observability, and production operations background - Experience with AI-assisted engineering tools and workflows - Track record supporting distributed teams across time zones - Interest in open source, technical writing, public speaking, or community events
