Staff Engineer

Role overview

A staff engineer is needed to operate across teams on the hardest problems at a large retail technology platform, spotting issues early and steering technical direction to reduce future incidents. The role works at the core of the platform to make it faster and more reliable, partners across the organization on cross-cutting integrations, and shapes engineering practice as AI becomes part of daily work. Ownership, customer focus, and pushing context down while raising concerns up are central to the culture.

Responsibilities

- Drive meaningful improvements to enterprise-grade retail software running at scale. - Set technical direction by making architecture calls and aligning teams behind them. - Work with stakeholders to scope, sharpen, and stress-test customer-facing features. - Engage directly with customers to understand pain points and translate them into better products. - Partner across the organization on unified solutions for problems that span multiple teams. - Mentor other engineers and help raise the team's bar for engineering judgment, code quality, and craft. - Help plan, estimate, and de-risk large initiatives by breaking them down and sequencing well.

Requirements

- Depth and influence that typically come from around 8+ years of experience; the team cares about capability more than a specific number. - Track record of building and running production systems at scale. - Deep, hands-on experience in at least one modern backend stack; the codebase spans .NET/C#, TypeScript, Ruby, and React on the frontend with PostgreSQL, MS SQL, and MongoDB. - Experience designing scalable data models across relational and non-relational stores. - Routine use of LLMs to research systems, diagnose issues, plan solutions, write and review code, and validate what ships. - Comfort and enthusiasm for an agentic-first environment, with a track record of raising a team's baseline through repeatable practices.

Nice to have

- Background in POS, ecommerce, payments, or other retail and commerce technology. - Experience building and monitoring cloud-native infrastructure on AWS. - Deep experience with third-party integrations. - Track record of bringing AI-assisted workflows, tooling, or agents to an engineering team.

Benefits and work setup

Targeted starting salary range of $170,000 to $230,000 USD depending on level. Total rewards include full medical, dental, and vision coverage, equity in the form of stock options, a hardware and software allowance, and flexible vacation and sick days.
