Role overview An Open Source Solutions Engineer role dedicated to helping organizations migrate away from expensive SaaS products toward self-hosted, open-source alternatives. The work covers the full lifecycle of adoption, from evaluating the open-source landscape through deployment, customization, and successful rollout. Engineers in this role act as trusted advisors who translate deep knowledge of the open-source ecosystem into measurable cost savings and operational control for clients.
Responsibilities - Evaluate open-source projects for maturity, active maintenance, community health, and alignment with client requirements - Build business cases comparing SaaS costs against self-hosted alternatives and recommend specific tools - Deploy and configure chosen solutions on appropriate infrastructure with production-grade reliability, backups, and recovery - Customize and extend open-source platforms to integrate with existing systems and match client workflows - Manage the transition from SaaS to self-hosted, including data migration, user training, and adoption support - Stay current on the open-source landscape to know which projects are production-ready and which carry risk
Requirements - Deep familiarity with the open-source ecosystem and the maturity tradeoffs of major projects - Hands-on experience deploying and operating self-hosted software in production environments - Skills in customization, integration, and extending open-source codebases - Ability to assess community health, project velocity, and long-term viability of OSS options - Strong client-facing communication to guide stakeholders through migration decisions - Comfort owning the full lifecycle from evaluation through post-deployment support
Nice to have - Contributions to or active participation in open-source communities - Experience with infrastructure, containers, and infrastructure-as-code tooling - Background in client enablement, training, and documentation
