Remote job
Software Engineer Intern (Backend / AI)
Job details
About this role
Role overview A three-month, full-time paid internship focused on backend and AI engineering, where interns are not handed a sandbox but instead own a small, real piece of a live platform. The role is designed to ship production work in the first weeks and can convert into a full-time offer, with the stipend figure shared on the very first call before any application effort is invested.
Responsibilities - Choose a track spanning platform services (Python backends, connectors, access control), AI systems (generation pipelines, prompts, evaluations, model tooling), or application builds designed to be broken on purpose. - Ship a small, entirely owned feature into production within the first three weeks. - Write a design note before writing code and a post-incident root-cause analysis afterwards, with coaching provided along the way. - Sit in team review sessions where claims are argued over and stress-tested for accuracy. - Treat your portfolio or prior builds as the first round of the application, replacing a traditional interview screen.
Requirements - Real coding experience in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Go, comfortable enough to land a roughly 400-line pull request without flinching. - At least one project that left your laptop and was used by other people, whether a side project, a college system, or a lab tool. - Active curiosity about AI systems, with hands-on experience using large language models and at least one considered opinion about where they break down. - A reflexive habit of asking "how do I know that is true?" about your own work. - Either a prior build to submit (any stack, any age) with a one-page note on its data model and a decision you would now reverse, or the willingness to build a small demo in roughly 90 minutes.
Benefits and work setup - Three-month, full-time, paid position with a path to a full-time offer at the end. - Stipend amount disclosed on the first call, before candidates invest time in applying. - Two application routes weighted equally: submitting existing work or building a small live demo, so candidates are not penalized for limited evening availability. - Interns are treated as real contributors rather than observers, with no requirement of prior internship experience.
