Job details
About this role
Role overview A remote, asynchronous database support engineer position focused on helping developers unblock complex issues across a Postgres-based backend platform. The role bridges customer-facing technical support and engineering, working with advanced users to troubleshoot deep technical problems and improve product quality. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced, high-volume environments and is excited about developer tools built to scale to millions of users.
Responsibilities - Investigate and resolve advanced technical issues spanning Postgres, authentication, row-level security, storage, realtime features, edge functions, and client libraries. - Provide consultative guidance to optimize workloads, avoid common pitfalls, and tailor solutions for the most advanced users. - Reproduce bugs, isolate root causes, propose workarounds, and escalate to engineering with clear reproduction steps. - Ask targeted clarifying questions that turn incomplete reports into actionable support cases. - Communicate empathetically with users at all technical levels, especially during high-impact or time-sensitive incidents. - Identify recurring patterns across tickets and recommend improvements to documentation, tooling, and the product itself. - Mentor junior team members and contribute to raising overall support quality.
Requirements - 6+ years of experience in technical support, backend engineering, SRE, or a similar discipline. - Strong PostgreSQL knowledge, including internals such as autovacuum behavior, WAL growth, long-running transactions, and table bloat. - Proficiency in high-performance SQL and query optimization. - Experience troubleshooting complex setups, including multi-tenant schema patterns. - Ability to debug edge functions and reason about distributed-system behavior under failure. - Hands-on experience handling data migration issues (pg_dump/restore, schema drift, failed migrations) and recovering safely. - Familiarity with cloud providers such as AWS, plus comfort with terminal and Linux environments. - Fluent bilingual Japanese/English, with prior experience supporting complex technical products for Japanese-speaking customers. - Ideally located in Japan; otherwise, able to work during Japan business hours.
Nice to have - Experience mentoring teammates and contributing to support quality programs.
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote with global hiring and asynchronous work culture. - Equity ownership for every team member. - Tech allowance for personal equipment and workspace setup. - Coworking or co-working allowance usable worldwide. - Health insurance coverage for employees (and partial coverage for dependents) regardless of location. - Annual company off-sites for team connection and collaboration. - Annual professional development budget for courses, books, conferences, or other learning.
