Safety Engineer

Role overview This role owns product safety for reconfigurable robotic cells used in high-mix manufacturing, covering functional safety, software-side safety, and the sign-off of every customer deployment. The position is embedded in the design process from the earliest concept stage, working alongside robotics, software, and mechanical engineers, rather than reviewing finished machines at the end. Because the cells change what they do between product variants, the work involves navigating a grey zone where traditional standards do not give a clean answer, and producing defensible written reasoning others can follow.

Responsibilities - Define and maintain the platform safety concept so that each new application only has to assess the hazards it actually changes, instead of repeating work on unchanged parts of the cell. - Contribute safety requirements from the first design review, take part in every product and application requirements document, and sign off on each solution design before build. - Specify each safety function in the safety PLC and robot safety controller (reliability targets, sensor integration, validation), and prove it works in practice. - Own risk assessments, the CE technical file, and the Declaration of Conformity for every cell, including the transition to the updated EU Machinery Regulation. - Cover site safety for each deployment: layout, guarding, operator access, and acceptance-test safety checks. - Investigate root causes of safety faults and incidents, write safety content for the cell manual, and respond to customer safety questions during presales.

Requirements - At least five years of machinery safety experience on industrial machines or robotic cells, including risk assessments and CE marking prepared or signed personally. - Functional safety experience specifying and validating safety functions on safety PLCs, robot safety controllers, and sensors such as radar, scanners, and light curtains. - Working knowledge of EU machinery law, including the updated Machinery Regulation, plus ISO 12100 (risk assessment) and ISO 13849 (functional safety). - Ability to read software designs and discuss with robotics engineers how motion planning and perception algorithms behave around people. - Demonstrated judgement in holding the safety line under schedule pressure and bringing senior engineers along. - Clear written English and willingness to travel roughly 25% of the time.

Nice to have - A recognised machinery safety qualification such as TÜV Functional Safety Engineer or CMSE. - Prior experience building a single safety concept that covered a family of machine variants. - Familiarity with collaborative or fenceless robot applications, and with bringing safety into motion, control, or perception software. - Background at a machine builder or integrator that scaled from a handful of machines per year to dozens.
