Job details
About this role
Role overview A fast-scaling text-to-speech reading platform is hiring a senior Android engineer to take ownership of major features within its flagship mobile app. The role blends hands-on coding with strategic product thinking in a flat, distributed organization where technical leadership is earned through delivery rather than title. The team's mission centers on turning written content — PDFs, books, articles, and documents — into high-quality audio for millions of users, including those with learning differences.
Responsibilities - Own end-to-end delivery of major app features, partnering closely with design to ship polished, user-delighting experiences. - Shape the technical direction of the Android team, including reliability metrics for key features. - Review pull requests, mentor teammates, and help maintain high engineering standards across the codebase. - Lead cross-functional discussions with product, design, and engineering peers to align on priorities. - Manage feature releases end-to-end, including nightly builds for the QA team and handling critical production issues. - Push the boundaries of Android UI/UX through self-driven improvements beyond written specifications.
Requirements - 5+ years of software engineering experience, with hands-on work building or contributing to at least one production Android app. - Deep familiarity with Android components and a strong grasp of Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android Animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit. - Product design intuition, user empathy, and a user-oriented problem-solving approach. - Solid understanding of testing principles and how to write maintainable, reliable tests. - Excellent communication skills and a strong work ethic with a drive for continuous improvement.
Nice to have - Experience contributing to or maintaining open-source Android projects. - Cross-platform experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS. - Familiarity with Jetpack Compose, Room, and custom Canvas/Paint work.
Benefits and work setup - 100% distributed, asynchronous working culture with no physical office. - Hands-off management style that emphasizes autonomy and deep focus. - Competitive compensation and an entrepreneurial environment that supports risk-taking and quick decision-making. - Opportunity to work on a widely used product serving people with dyslexia, ADHD, low vision, concussions, autism, and other learning differences.
