Engineering Manager

Role overview

A long-established international auction house specializing in art and luxury goods is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead distributed engineering teams that build the systems behind high-value sales and client experiences. The engineering organization spans internal tooling, client-facing products, platform infrastructure, and the real-time systems powering live auction events. The role is remote-first and globally distributed, with regular synchronous collaboration alongside async work.

Responsibilities

- Lead, hire, develop, and retain a team of five or more engineers across multiple time zones - Set and maintain the quality bar for the team's area of the platform, including engineering practices, observability, reliability, and code review - Partner with product management to define priorities and deliver meaningful business outcomes - Run the delivery cadence including planning, prioritization, retrospectives, and day-to-day unblocking - Manage cross-team dependencies and reduce coordination overhead across the organization - Handle incidents alongside the team, own follow-up, and ensure durable fixes get implemented - Give engineers regular, honest feedback and create real opportunities for growth - Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives on standards, tooling, process improvement, and developer growth

Requirements

- 3+ years managing engineering teams of five or more, with a track record of hiring, onboarding, and retaining strong people - Strong technical background in software engineering with depth to guide architectural and infrastructure decisions - Proven experience managing distributed or remote-first engineering teams across multiple time zones - Track record partnering with product management to define priorities and ship outcomes - Focus on engineering quality including observability, analytics, testing practices, and reliable delivery - Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to adapt style to engineers, leadership, and direct reports

Nice to have

- Familiarity with a stack that includes Go, Scala, React, TypeScript, Next.js, GraphQL, and gRPC - Experience with cloud infrastructure practices
