Role overview This is a remote position focused on establishing and maintaining the data governance framework for an organization's information assets. The role blends data science expertise with metadata management, working to ensure information is well-cataloged, trustworthy, and discoverable across the enterprise. It sits at the intersection of analytics, data quality, and stewardship practices.
Responsibilities - Design and maintain metadata models, data dictionaries, and catalog structures that document datasets, lineage, and business definitions - Develop and enforce data governance policies, standards, and stewardship workflows across data domains - Profile, classify, and assess datasets for quality, completeness, and conformance to governance rules - Build or curate tooling, dashboards, or automated checks that surface metadata and governance insights to technical and business stakeholders - Partner with analytics, engineering, and business teams to align data assets with organizational definitions and use cases - Investigate and remediate data quality issues, tracing problems back through lineage to root cause
Requirements - Demonstrated experience working with data governance, metadata management, or data cataloging concepts and tooling - Proficiency in SQL and at least one scripting or analytical language (such as Python or R) used for data profiling and analysis - Familiarity with data modeling approaches (relational, dimensional, or graph) and how metadata is captured in each - Understanding of data quality dimensions, stewardship practices, and lineage tracking - Ability to translate technical data concepts into clear documentation for non-technical audiences - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills applied to complex datasets
Nice to have - Exposure to modern data catalog or governance platforms (e.g., Collibra, Alation, Informatica, DataHub, or similar open-source alternatives) - Experience with cloud data warehouses and ETL/ELT pipelines - Knowledge of data privacy, classification, or regulatory considerations (such as PII handling) - Background contributing to a data mesh, data fabric, or federated governance program
