About this role
Role overview
A healthcare technology organization in the pharmacy benefits space is hiring a Senior Staff Data Engineer to define the long-range data platform strategy and ship the systems that power analytics, machine learning, and transparent drug pricing. The role combines hands-on architectural work with organization-wide technical leadership, influencing peer teams and executive decisions in a fast-moving, mission-driven environment.
Responsibilities
- Set the multi-year data engineering roadmap, anchoring technical choices in company-wide priorities and engineering best practices - Design coherent pipeline and API ecosystems that simplify infrastructure, reduce maintenance cost, and decompose complex problems into foundational components - Make high-leverage build-versus-buy and framework decisions, reviewing designs early to surface and mitigate technical risk - Deliver major systems reliably with appropriate monitoring, failure-domain characterization, and clearly defined success metrics - Enforce data governance for sensitive healthcare data (PII/PHI), security, and compliance while raising the bar on data quality across internal and external consumers - Mentor engineers, present technical strategy and business cases to executives, and break down silos to drive cross-functional adoption
Requirements
- Extensive senior-level experience building and operating distributed, production-grade data systems - Deep proficiency in Python and a modern cloud data warehouse such as Snowflake - Hands-on experience orchestrating pipelines with tools like Airflow and modeling transformations with DBT - Strong understanding of data governance, security, and regulatory requirements for sensitive information - Track record of leading through ambiguity, optimizing for the wider engineering organization rather than local outcomes, and influencing peer team roadmaps
Nice to have
- Experience applying large language models to optimize data workflows - Background in healthcare, pharmacy benefits, or another regulated data domain
Benefits and work setup
- Remote-eligible with location-based compensation zones across the United States - Medical, pharmacy, dental, vision, mental health, life, and disability insurance - 401(k) retirement savings program and flexible spending accounts - Discretionary paid time off plus twelve paid company holidays - Paid parental leave and an employee assistance program - Commuter benefits and support for professional development and training - Indicative base salary range of roughly $178,500 to $252,000 USD depending on zone, with potential eligibility for bonus or equity
