Remote job
Product Designer
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A venture-backed software company modernizing beverage alcohol retail is hiring a Product Designer to lead the end-to-end design of its Android-based point-of-sale terminal used by cashiers and store staff every day. This is an ownership-oriented design role, not a wireframe-execution role: the designer will lead user research with frontline operators and translate findings into product direction alongside product managers and engineers. The position sits within a small, design-respected product and engineering team working on operational retail software where every interaction has real cost and consequence.
Responsibilities
- Own the counter experience end to end, including checkout, payments, returns, and the everyday workflows store staff rely on. - Plan and run discovery with cashiers and store managers through interviews, remote testing, and occasional in-store visits, then turn findings into concrete design decisions. - Design for the realities of retail: long lines, interruptions, mixed-experience staff, and hardware peripherals such as scanners, card readers, and receipt printers that must just work. - Partner with product managers to frame the right problem before solving it, constructively challenging assumptions and over-specified solutions. - Collaborate with terminal engineers to ship faithfully, stay curious about platform and hardware capabilities, and help evolve an AI-assisted design and build workflow. - Extend the shared design system to the terminal so the counter and back office feel like one product, and contribute to web and back-office design as priorities shift. - Participate in the full product lifecycle, from roadmap conversations through post-launch iteration.
Requirements
- 4+ years of product or UX design experience in a startup or similarly fast-moving environment. - A portfolio showing end-to-end work, including research, problem framing, and shipped product. - Strong visual and interaction design skills with attention to detail that matters for users, and judgment about when to push versus when to ship. - Experience designing and shipping mobile or tablet applications with a strong grasp of native platform patterns. - Research skills including planning discovery, synthesizing findings quickly, and turning ambiguous problems into clear direction, including when research is mostly remote. - Systems thinking: care about patterns, consistency, and how designs hold up at scale rather than designing screen by screen. - Comfort working alongside engineers, understanding implementation constraints, and partnering with PMs to define problems, not just solutions. - Proficiency with Figma and modern AI tooling such as Claude, with the ability to prototype quickly to test assumptions.
Nice to have
- Experience designing complex B2B or operational workflows in retail, logistics, or similar domains. - Familiarity with building, maintaining, and driving adoption of design systems. - Active personal use of AI tools and enthusiasm for designing AI-assisted experiences that feel human and intentional. - Prior experience as a sole or lead designer. - Exposure to frontend development or a strong mental model of how design-to-build handoff works.
Benefits and work setup
- Anticipated base salary range of $150,000–$160,000, with offers based on experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity. - Competitive equity grant in the company. - Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage. - Unlimited flexible paid time off. - Small product and engineering team that takes design seriously, with true ownership over product direction and meaningful impact on real operational software.
