Remote job
System Test Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview Establish and run system-level testing for photonic switching hardware as it moves from prototype toward deployment in AI networks. The work combines hands-on optical and electronic lab setups, automated testing, and clear planning and reporting so engineering teams can assess readiness and performance.
Responsibilities - Shape test strategy, plans, setups, execution, and reporting for a switching platform. - Build, debug, and maintain optical and electronic measurement systems, with attention to safety, stability, and repeatability. - Automate test sequences, data capture, and analysis to reduce manual effort and speed up learning. - Track readiness, critical paths, schedules, and risks; identify work that can proceed in parallel. - Improve test processes by anticipating failure modes, reducing wasted effort, and preparing for hardware arrivals. - Coordinate with photonics, electronics, firmware, and product teams to align test results with system performance needs.
Requirements - Hands-on lab experience with complex optical, photonic, or mixed-signal electronic setups. - Ability to build and optimise measurement systems and automate test workflows. - Fluency in Python, including NumPy, and familiarity with VISA/SCPI protocols. - Experience with test automation frameworks, scripting, and data analysis tools. - Strong planning and organisational skills, including early risk identification and progress tracking. - UK location or willingness to relocate, with regular attendance at an Oxford lab.
Nice to have - Experience scaling test infrastructure for high-performance communications or switching hardware. - Automated analysis pipeline development, or experience leading or mentoring validation teams. - Knowledge of reliability, environmental, or system-level testing for optical or networking hardware. - Background in optics, photonics, MEMS, semiconductor testing, mixed-signal electronics, or high-speed transceiver validation. - A practical approach to balancing delivery pace, risk, and technical depth.
