Software Engineer, Developer Tools
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A developer-focused email sending platform is hiring an engineer to join its DevTools Squad, building SDKs, CLI utilities, MCP servers, and the backend services that power them. The mission is to make it straightforward for people to embed, observe, and depend on the product inside the tools and workflows they already use. The position is fully remote for candidates based in Americas or European timezones, with some travel expected for team offsites, conferences, and community events.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain developer-facing tools that integrate cleanly across languages, frameworks, and runtime environments - Operate the backend services that support SDKs, CLI utilities, MCP integrations, and related surfaces - Partner with product squads to keep API contracts and behavior consistent across tooling and documentation - Design and ship the interfaces developers and AI agents use to interact with the product, including MCP, skills, and CLI commands - Own compatibility, testing, release management, and upgrade paths so downstream users can rely on what ships - Develop shared tooling that helps adjacent teams coordinate changes across the developer toolchain - Engage directly with the developer community through support channels, GitHub issues, and pull requests
Requirements
- Significant production experience building and operating APIs or backend services - Proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js - Solid grasp of authentication, authorization, retry logic, idempotency, rate limiting, and partial failure handling - Track record of shipping software that other developers integrate with, including the responsibilities that come with it - Comfort working with outside contributors or in an open source project setting
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience building SDKs, command-line tools, MCP servers, or cross-platform integrations - Familiarity with React or frontend build tooling - Background operating systems that depend on queues, monitoring, and error recovery - Fluency across multiple programming languages and intuition for what makes a library feel native in each - Domain experience with email or a strong motivation to learn the space
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote role with teammates distributed across many countries - Salary range of $130,000 to $160,000 USD, adjusted for location and experience - Periodic in-person travel for team offsites, conferences, and meetups - Culture that emphasizes thoughtful feedback, shared learning, and mutual care - High bar for product quality, reliability, and the small details that make software pleasant to use
