Software Engineer, Developer Tools
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A developer tools team is hiring a software engineer to build and maintain the SDKs, CLI, integrations, and supporting backend services that power a developer-focused email platform used by millions. The role spans the full lifecycle of developer-facing tooling, from API and library design through testing, releases, and direct support via community channels. It suits an engineer who enjoys both service work and crafting interfaces that other developers—and AI agents—rely on every day.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain SDKs, command-line tools, integrations, and Model Context Protocol interfaces across multiple languages and frameworks - Operate the backend services and shared infrastructure that support developer-facing tooling - Collaborate with product teams on consistent API contracts and behavior across libraries, CLI, integrations, and documentation - Own compatibility, automated testing, release engineering, and upgrade paths so consumers can rely on what ships - Build internal tooling that helps other engineering squads ship changes safely across the developer tools surface - Engage directly with users through community channels, GitHub issues, and pull requests
Requirements
- Professional experience building and maintaining production APIs or backend services - Strong proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js - Solid grasp of authentication, authorization, retries, idempotency, rate limits, and partial-failure handling - Track record of building software that other developers depend on, with awareness of semantic versioning and breaking-change impact - Comfort working across multiple programming languages and adapting library design to each ecosystem
Nice to have
- Experience maintaining open source projects or working with external contributors - Familiarity with React or frontend build tooling - Experience operating systems with queues, monitoring, and error-recovery patterns - Hands-on work with SDKs, CLI tools, MCP servers, or platform integrations - Background in or curiosity about email protocols and deliverability
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote position open to candidates in Americas or European time zones - Periodic travel expected for team offsites, conferences, and community meetups - Salary range of $130,000 to $160,000 USD, adjusted for location and experience - Latitude to shape technical decisions and take projects from discovery through production - Tight feedback loops with the developers who actually use the tools being built
