Remote job
Software Engineer, Backend
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Design, build, and operate backend systems that support a high-volume developer email platform. The role combines product delivery with infrastructure ownership: you will shape APIs and services, make distributed processing dependable under load, and remain responsible for how systems perform in production.
Responsibilities
- Own features from proposal and scope through implementation, including APIs, dashboard capabilities, and supporting services. - Design and operate distributed systems such as queues and background workers that handle spikes, retries, duplicate events, concurrency, and partial failures. - Scale APIs and databases while improving performance, data integrity, and operational efficiency. - Run the services you build through monitoring, safe deployments, incident response, and participation in an on-call rotation. - Work with support teams and customers to identify recurring issues and turn them into product improvements. - Strengthen tests, developer tooling, and existing systems alongside delivering new capabilities.
Requirements
- At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including substantial production backend work. - Demonstrated experience with asynchronous processing, queues, distributed systems, retries, concurrency, and failure handling. - Ability to design systems from scratch and reason through migrations, rollouts, and operational trade-offs. - Understanding of cloud infrastructure, deployments, observability, and service operations. - Strong ownership, product judgment, and willingness to work across design, implementation, and production support.
Nice to have
- Deep experience with Node.js, TypeScript, Go, and Postgres. - Experience operating services on AWS using serverless or container-based infrastructure. - Background with developer tools, public APIs, or email infrastructure.
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote role for candidates in the Americas or European time zones. - Flexible working hours with shared working periods for collaboration, plus some travel for team offsites, conferences, and meetups. - Meaningful ownership, decision-making autonomy, a high quality bar, and a collaborative low-ego team. - Published compensation range: $140,000–$180,000 USD, depending on experience.
