Software Engineer, Backend
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Join a backend engineering team building reliable services for a high-volume developer email platform, with the position aligned to European time zones. You will own work across APIs, databases, asynchronous processing, and operational reliability, taking responsibility for both the feature experience and the systems that support it.
Responsibilities
- Propose and scope product improvements, then deliver the APIs, dashboard capabilities, and backend services required to support them. - Build dependable distributed systems, including queues and workers that behave predictably during traffic spikes, retries, duplicate events, concurrency, and partial failures. - Improve API and database scalability, performance, data integrity, and resource efficiency as usage increases. - Operate production services through monitoring, safe deployment practices, incident response, and an on-call rotation. - Partner with support and customers to investigate recurring problems and convert findings into product improvements. - Improve engineering quality through stronger tests, tooling, documentation, and incremental modernization of existing systems.
Requirements
- At least 8 years of software engineering experience with significant backend systems operated in production. - Practical experience with queues, asynchronous workflows, distributed systems, retries, duplicate processing, concurrency, and failure recovery. - Ability to design new systems and plan their rollout, migration, and long-term operation. - Understanding of cloud infrastructure, service deployment, observability, and operational ownership. - A quality-focused, collaborative approach with the autonomy to make decisions and move work forward.
Nice to have
- Deep experience with Node.js, TypeScript, Go, and Postgres. - Experience running serverless or containerized services on AWS. - Background in developer tooling, public APIs, or email infrastructure.
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote role intended for candidates in European time zones. - Flexible working hours with shared collaboration periods, plus some travel for team offsites, conferences, and meetups. - Meaningful ownership, high standards for reliability, and a supportive low-ego team culture. - Published compensation range: $140,000–$180,000 USD, depending on experience.
