Backend Engineer

Role overview A growing developer platform serving millions of users is hiring a backend engineer to help build and operate the core services behind a high-volume transactional email product. The team is small and focused on developer experience, reliability, and quality, and this role is fully remote across Americas and European time zones with occasional travel for offsites and conferences. Engineers are expected to own features end-to-end, from concept through production operations.

Responsibilities - Own features from idea and scoping through API design, dashboard experiences, and the services that power them. - Build reliable distributed systems, including queues and background workers that handle traffic spikes, retries, and predictable failure modes. - Scale APIs and databases to improve performance, data integrity, and efficiency as usage grows. - Operate what you ship, including meaningful monitoring, safe deployments, and participation in an on-call rotation. - Partner with support and customers to identify patterns in recurring issues and translate them into improvements. - Strengthen engineering quality by improving tests, tooling, and existing systems alongside new work.

Requirements - 8+ years of software engineering experience with substantial time building and operating backend services in production. - Hands-on experience with queues, asynchronous processing, and distributed systems, including retries, duplicate events, concurrency, and partial failures. - Ability to design systems from scratch and reason through rollout strategy. - Understanding of cloud infrastructure and service operations, including deployments, observability, capacity, and debugging.

Nice to have - Deep experience with Node.js, TypeScript, Go, and Postgres. - Building and operating services on AWS, including serverless or container-based infrastructure. - Background in developer tools, public APIs, or email infrastructure.

Benefits and work setup - Fully remote team with flexibility around shared working hours. - Compensation: $140,000 - $180,000 USD, commensurate with experience.
