Remote job
Software Engineer (Rust) - Backend
Job details
About this role
Role overview Join a newly formed team building the commercial side of a multimodal data platform tailored for physical AI applications. The work centers on a cloud-native analytical database written in Rust and built around Apache Arrow, designed to ingest, index, and query large-scale temporal multimodal data. This is a hands-on backend engineering role focused on scaling systems that already operate at petabyte scale.
Responsibilities - Design, implement, and operate the core components of a Rust-based analytical database optimized for multimodal and time-series workloads, including sparse, wide robotics-style data tables. - Extend the system to handle specialized query operators such as those involving 3D transforms and other domain-specific semantics. - Evolve the architecture as usage grows, distributing work across nodes and tackling performance, reliability, and observability bottlenecks. - Build ingestion, indexing, storage, querying, and streaming paths for high-throughput data pipelines. - Take broad ownership of the codebase, contributing to design decisions alongside other engineers who value agency and helpfulness.
Requirements - Three to five years of professional Rust experience, or strong proficiency in a comparable systems language such as C or C++ plus motivation to ramp up in Rust. - Hands-on experience with a managed database product, data platform, or other high-traffic system operating at meaningful scale. - Track record of building backend systems in production, with growing comfort owning design and architectural choices. - Familiarity with distributed systems and the trade-offs involved in evolving them under increasing load. - Comfort working remotely with a few hours of afternoon CET overlap for team collaboration.
Nice to have - Experience working with multimodal logs, robotics data, or other physical-AI workloads (prior robotics knowledge is not required). - Background contributing to or maintaining open source developer tools or infrastructure.
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote role based anywhere in Europe. - Competitive cash and equity compensation. - Six weeks of paid vacation plus the hardware and software needed to do the job. - Twelve weeks of fully paid parental leave for every parent, on top of local statutory entitlements.
