Staff Software Engineer, Consumer Engineering
Job details
About this role
Role overview A staff-level backend engineering position on a centralized consumer product organization that builds and scales the products hundreds of millions of people use to discover content, join communities, and engage with one another. The role sits at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems and core user journeys, partnering directly with product, design, data science, ML, and client engineers. The hire rotates across several high-impact teams covering areas such as home feeds and recommendations, onboarding and growth, creator tools, identity and account management, monetization and conversion, and trust and safety.
Responsibilities - Translate business and user needs into reliable, low-latency technical solutions in close partnership with product management, design, data science, and client engineers across iOS, Android, and web. - Own the full software lifecycle for major product initiatives, from technical design documents and API contracts through development, testing, rollout, and observability. - Design, build, and evaluate A/B experiments using analytics tools such as BigQuery, HEX, or Firebase to study user behavior, conversion funnels, and retention loops. - Build and maintain scalable APIs (GraphQL, REST, or gRPC) and distributed backend services optimized for client consumption and consumer-facing performance. - Establish engineering best practices, improve developer workflows, mentor teammates, and adopt AI-integrated tools to ship high-quality product faster.
Requirements - 7+ years of hands-on backend development experience building and operating large-scale distributed serving systems in high-concurrency environments. - Proficiency in a modern backend language such as Go, Python, Java, Kotlin, Rust, or C++. - Expertise designing and maintaining scalable APIs using GraphQL, REST, or gRPC for native mobile and web clients. - Experience with high-throughput caching layers and distributed datastores such as Redis, Cassandra, or PostgreSQL. - A data-informed, hypothesis-driven mindset and comfort designing experiments alongside data scientists and product managers. - Strong communication skills with a track record of driving cross-functional alignment in remote or hybrid team environments.
Nice to have - Interest or experience using AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate development workflows.
Benefits and work setup - Disclosed US base salary range of $217,000–$303,000, with eligibility for equity in the form of restricted stock units and, depending on the role, commission. - Comprehensive benefits package for US-based employees including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) program with employer match, generous vacation time, and parental leave. - Fully remote or hybrid team environment, with an equal opportunity employer committed to reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities.
