Remote job
Staff Software Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview Join a small, fully remote engineering team building intelligent commerce experiences on a major ecommerce platform. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will own the checkout and post-purchase surfaces that shoppers see on thousands of stores, along with the backend services and experimentation infrastructure that power them. This is a high-autonomy role working directly with a Product Manager and engineering peers to solve ambiguous problems end-to-end.
Responsibilities - Build and maintain extensions that render personalized offers inside checkout, thank-you, customer-account, and post-purchase pages, including the server-side logic that selects what shoppers see. - Design and rebuild the experimentation reporting layer, including data models, endpoints, and SQL queries that surface accurate experiment results to merchants. - Develop secure REST APIs in PHP and TypeScript that serve extensions, admin tools, and platform integrations. - Investigate and resolve merchant-reported production issues, improve observability, and participate in an on-call rotation. - Use AI-assisted development tools fluently across coding, review, and testing, applying human judgment where it matters. - Perform your own quality assurance through unit, end-to-end, and manual testing against real stores, since there is no separate QA team.
Requirements - Extensive experience building production frontend systems with React and TypeScript, ideally in constrained web runtimes. - Strong backend skills in PHP and TypeScript, including REST API design, relational databases, and event pipelines. - Comfort moving between rendering bugs, endpoint work, and data queries within tightly sandboxed platform environments. - Track record of owning ambiguous problems, designing the right solution shape, and pushing back when there is a better approach. - Track record with platform-wide, componentized systems and orchestration patterns. - Strong fit for a remote-first, high-autonomy culture with responsive communication during working hours; CS/engineering background or equivalent experience.
Nice to have - Prior ecommerce platform app development, particularly checkout extensibility, post-purchase extensions, or admin and storefront GraphQL APIs. - Experience with Preact or other tightly constrained runtimes such as React Native. - Comfort operating across Kanban and Sprint workflows.
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote position open to candidates in the U.S. and Canada. - Flexible vacation policy, generous holiday schedule, parental leave, sick time, and a birthday holiday. - 100% employer-paid health, dental, and insurance coverage for employees and their families. - Retirement plan options including 401(k) for U.S. employees and TFSA/RRSP for Canadian employees, plus a 3% gross salary contribution regardless of location. - Annual U.S. pay range of $175,000–$225,000 USD, varying by geographic market, knowledge, skills, and experience.
