About this role
Role overview
This internship sits within a system architecture group focused on designing fault-tolerant quantum computers built on photonic technology. The team works at the interface of hardware development, manufacturing, and quantum architecture to discover new schemes for photonic quantum computation and translate abstract quantum information protocols into physical system designs. Interns contribute analytical and programming work in a research-driven environment aimed at moving quantum computing from theory toward deployable systems.
Responsibilities
- Develop prototype software for controlling and simulating the optical networks that sit inside photonic quantum processors. - Apply results from quantum information theory, network design, or optimization to improve optical architecture designs. - Explore and develop new approaches to photonic quantum computing. - Simulate and benchmark different protocols. - Document findings and communicate results clearly to the wider team.
Requirements
- Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or an equivalent field. - Currently studying or recently finished a postgraduate degree, with a PhD preferred. - Programming experience in Python, C++, Julia, or similar languages. - Competent use of collaborative software development tools such as Git-based platforms. - Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate closely with other researchers and engineers.
Nice to have
- Background knowledge in quantum optics, photonic hardware, switch network design, optimization, or graph theory.
Benefits and work setup
- Internships hired on a rolling basis with durations of 3 to 6 months. - Placements available in Palo Alto, California (United States); Bristol (United Kingdom); or remote. - Hourly compensation scales with the highest education level completed, and U.S. placements include a variable housing or commuter stipend based on the intern's permanent residency.
