Gamification Senior Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails)

Role overview

This role calls for a senior backend engineer to lead the design and delivery of Ruby on Rails services inside a gamification-focused engineering group. The work centers on high-throughput backend systems that support a large-scale consumer product, blending hands-on architecture with mentorship and cross-team collaboration. It is a senior, impact-oriented position suited to engineers who enjoy owning complex technical problems end-to-end.

Responsibilities

- Architect and build Rails-based backend services that are performant, scalable, and reliable under high transaction volumes - Lead the technical design of complex features from product requirements through deployment and monitoring - Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks, optimize database queries, and improve resilience under load - Drive architectural decisions for team-owned services, weighing tradeoffs and communicating recommendations clearly - Mentor engineers across levels through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance - Improve team practices around code quality, testing, observability, and deployment - Collaborate with product, design, QA, and other engineering teams to translate goals into scoped solutions - Participate in an on-call rotation, contributing to root cause analysis and long-term reliability improvements

Requirements

- 5–8 years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial time building production Ruby on Rails applications - Proven track record of owning and delivering complex, multi-component features in a team environment - Experience designing and operating backend systems that handle significant scale and complexity - Expert-level proficiency with Ruby on Rails, including idiomatic Ruby and understanding of framework conventions - Strong PostgreSQL skills, including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning at scale - Solid understanding of API design, including RESTful services, serialization, and versioning - Experience with background job processing frameworks

Nice to have

- Familiarity with event-driven architectures, streaming systems such as Kafka, or real-time data pipelines - Experience with Redis caching strategies - Exposure to microservices migration or service decomposition work - Background in consumer-facing products with high engagement or transactional volume
