Member of Engineering (Multimodality - Research Lead)
Job details
About this role
Role overview A frontier AI lab is creating a new team to lead multimodality research and development, with the goal of teaching its coding-focused model to perceive visual inputs. The role blends hands-on research leadership with team building from scratch in a greenfield area. It suits someone who can shape both the science and the people around a strategic capability.
Responsibilities - Stand up and lead a new multimodality group, setting direction and recruiting key contributors - Design and run experiments that extend a frontier language model with vision and other modalities - Drive the research roadmap across data, modeling, training, and evaluation choices - Prototype and ship capabilities that improve how the model interacts with visual coding contexts - Partner with engineering and product teams to bring multimodal features into the product surface - Stay current on external multimodal research and translate promising ideas into internal work
Requirements - Deep experience training large neural networks and running serious ML research programs - Strong programming and systems skills to iterate quickly on experiments and infrastructure - Familiarity with modern training stacks, distributed compute, and large-scale datasets - Ability to operate in ambiguity, choosing simple solutions and shipping incrementally - Proven research taste and a track record of influencing model direction through empirical work - Comfort collaborating across research, engineering, and product boundaries
Nice to have - Prior 0-to-1 leadership experience with substantial ownership - Distinguished research background on vision-language models or multimodal architectures - Understanding of the challenges involved in native multimodality rather than bolted-on approaches - Experience building agentic systems that drive a computer interface
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote with flexible hours (EMEA / East Coast) - 37 days of vacation and holidays per year - Health insurance allowance for the employee and dependents - 16 weeks of flexible, full-pay parental leave - Allowances for wellbeing, ongoing learning, and home office setup - Company-provided equipment and frequent team gatherings
