Senior Backend Engineer - Payments
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A senior backend engineering position focused on the payment infrastructure that moves money between banks, payment partners, and internal accounts. The work centers on building integrations with established payment schemes, ensuring every transaction settles accurately and on time, and architecting systems that recover gracefully from partner outages and network failures. It is a high-stakes engineering role within a financial platform serving tens of thousands of business customers, where reliability and correctness are non-negotiable.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain integrations with banks and payment partners across schemes such as SEPA, Faster Payments, SWIFT, and similar networks. - Own the reliability of inbound and outbound payment flows, including reconciliation, settlement, and exception handling. - Architect systems that stay resilient through partner outages, network failures, and edge cases common in financial messaging. - Lead initiatives to improve observability, fault tolerance, and operational excellence across the payment rails. - Collaborate with compliance, finance operations, and product teams to evolve payment capabilities, address technical debt, and guide migrations. - Participate in code reviews, post-mortems, and mentor other engineers on payment-system patterns and best practices.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience building payment integrations, bank APIs, or financial messaging formats such as ISO 20022, SWIFT, SEPA, or Faster Payments. - Strong grasp of payment flows end-to-end, including initiation, routing, reconciliation, settlement, and exception handling. - Background designing and operating highly available, resilient distributed systems with robust error recovery and observability. - Strong server-side development experience, ideally in Kotlin or Java, with work in microservices architectures. - Proficiency with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, cloud environments such as AWS and Kubernetes, and observability tooling such as Grafana. - Demonstrated ability to own production payment systems through incidents and operational complexity, with strong problem-solving skills.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with payment compliance and regulatory considerations such as AML, sanctions screening, or PSD2. - Understanding of safeguarding of customer funds and the operational impact of money-movement pipelines. - Experience using AI-enhanced development tools as integrated partners for system design, documentation, and code generation, with a willingness to grow that fluency further.
Benefits and work setup
- Human-reviewed application and interview process, with accessibility accommodations available on request for candidates who need a specific format. - Encouragement to apply even if not every requirement is met, with a stated commitment to diverse backgrounds and experiences. - Multidisciplinary engineering organization that values transparency, collaboration, and engineering excellence, and is actively scaling AI adoption across engineering workflows.
