Role overview
A senior engineering role charged with transforming a newly acquired SQL Server environment into a hardened, automated, and fully observable platform. The position partners across engineering, analytics, finance, and leadership to safeguard availability, recoverability, and performance at multi-terabyte scale in a 24x7 production setting.
Responsibilities
- Own availability, recoverability, and performance for every SQL Server platform in the acquired estate, including inventory, backup validation, and test restores that prove Recovery Time Objectives - Operate high availability features including Always On, failover clustering, log shipping, and replication, and run planned failover exercises on a published cadence - Lead incident response, write post-incident reviews with tracked corrective actions, and own disaster recovery planning including annual DR exercises - Maintain and extend SSIS packages and SSRS reports, and build new T-SQL, stored procedures, and SSIS where needed - Automate patching, index and statistics maintenance, integrity checks, backup verification, and environment refreshes via PowerShell, T-SQL, Python, or infrastructure-as-code tooling - Build telemetry, alerting, and thorough runbooks, and participate in a shared on-call rotation supporting a 24x7 environment
Requirements
- 10+ years in production database engineering with direct operational ownership of a 24x7 environment - Demonstrated execution of measured restores under pressure rather than passive monitoring of backup jobs - Deep expertise in SQL Server 2016+, including Always On availability groups, failover clustering, and transactional replication - Advanced T-SQL, execution plan analysis, and indexing strategy, with the judgment to root-cause at the schema level when appropriate - Hands-on AWS experience with RDS, RDS Custom, or EC2, plus at least one on-prem-to-cloud migration - Automation fluency in PowerShell and/or Python combined with proactive stakeholder communication

- Migrating or retiring legacy Microsoft BI assets into a modern cloud data platform - AWS DMS for replication and migration - Snowflake, dbt, or comparable modern warehouse tooling - MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Aurora experience - Azure SQL exposure - Operating through a post-acquisition integration - Property, mortgage, or fintech domain background
Benefits and work setup
