Role overview The Principal Database Programmer leads the full lifecycle of clinical database programming for research studies, from initial design through post-lock archiving. This senior, remote role partners across data management, project management, EDC vendors, sponsors, and third-party providers to deliver compliant, high-quality databases on time. The position also mentors junior programmers, drives cross-functional initiatives, and contributes to internal tools and standards.
Responsibilities - Own programming delivery for assigned studies, including scoping, scheduling, forecasting, and budget management - Design, build, validate, and maintain clinical databases and supporting applications, including forms, edit checks, and complex rule development - Perform system administration, troubleshoot issues, and provide advanced technical support across internal and third-party platforms - Develop study-specific validation documentation and contribute to CDISC standards (CDASH, SDTM, ADaM) and CRF standards libraries - Coordinate with data management from CRF design through database lock and archival, ensuring regulatory and SOP compliance - Train junior staff, lead onboarding, present software demonstrations, and participate in SOP and process documentation efforts
Requirements - Minimum 8 years of relevant experience with a bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience - Strong therapeutic-area background, particularly in Oncology; Autoimmune disease experience is a strong advantage - Hands-on experience with Rave and Veeva EDC platforms - Proficiency in object-oriented programming languages such as C#, C++, or VBScript - Working knowledge of CDISC standards and ability to build complex edit checks across more than one CDMS - Solid understanding of drug, device, or biologic development plus clinical data management practices, with strong leadership, organizational, and English communication skills
