Remote job
Senior Mechanical Designer - Fuel Recycling
Job details
About this role
Role overview Design and document custom mechanical equipment for an emerging nuclear fuel recycling process. You’ll turn engineering concepts into buildable hardware, working with engineers and fabrication specialists from initial models through prototyping, assembly, and testing. Equipment may need to operate at high temperatures and in chemically aggressive or radiation-intensive environments.
Responsibilities - Create detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks, including assemblies, weldments, and sheet metal parts. - Prepare fabrication, machining, welding, assembly, and installation packages with tolerances, GD&T, bills of materials, and manufacturing notes. - Apply design for manufacturability and assembly principles to custom vessels, tooling, fixtures, furnace components, and process equipment. - Work with engineering colleagues, machinists, welders, and vendors to resolve fabrication questions and improve designs. - Maintain controlled CAD files and drawing revisions, and support prototype assembly, equipment integration, and design reviews. - Incorporate fabrication and test feedback into iterative design updates and contribute to shared drawing standards.
Requirements - Associate degree, technical certification, bachelor’s degree in a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience. - At least five years creating detailed mechanical designs and fabrication drawings. - Advanced SolidWorks skills, including complex assemblies, weldments, sheet metal, and drawing production. - Practical knowledge of machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, and mechanical assembly. - Experience preparing complete manufacturing documentation with GD&T, tolerances, bills of materials, and notes. - Ability to interpret engineering requirements and apply design for manufacturability and assembly principles.
Nice to have Experience with nuclear or radiological facilities; gloveboxes, hot cells, shielding, or remote handling; high-temperature equipment above 500 °C; molten salt, vacuum, or corrosive chemical systems; and large weldments or process vessels.
Benefits and work setup Oak Ridge, Tennessee is the preferred location. The work may involve access to export-controlled information, for which eligibility can be limited under U.S. law.
