Senior Backend Engineer (Node.js)
Job details
About this role
Role overview
This is a senior backend engineering role focused on owning the server-side foundation of a white-label travel platform that already powers hotels and flights and is about to add experiences, car rentals, and additional payment providers. The position is backend-heavy and product-driven, suited to someone who enjoys moving from idea to design to shipped code rather than working from detailed specs. The team is small, fast-moving, and looking for a candidate who can grow into the primary backend decision-maker for the product line within roughly six months.
Responsibilities
- Design backend services so that adding a new vertical does not require rebuilding functionality that already works. - Lead technical integration of third-party travel and payment APIs, keeping bookings reliable when external suppliers are slow or fail. - Prioritize and resolve existing technical debt in an order that improves reliability and delivery speed without blocking new work. - Shape the architecture for schedulers, cron jobs, and background workers so they stay dependable as traffic grows. - Operate and tune AWS infrastructure to support client launches without over-engineering. - Set engineering standards and clean up foundational code as the product and team expand.
Requirements
- 4 to 5 years of backend engineering experience, including at least 2 years of full-time production work with Node.js and TypeScript. - Backgrounds in Java or Python are welcome if you have since worked in Node full time. - Experience designing REST APIs and relational schemas in PostgreSQL. - Hands-on work with background jobs, schedulers, or workers that integrate with third-party systems. - Roughly two years of practical AWS experience running a product that handles real traffic. - A track record of taking ownership of outcomes beyond assigned tickets, stepping in when teammates are out, and contributing to technical decisions for a team while still writing code daily.
Nice to have
- Prior experience in a fast-moving product company with little process, where priorities can shift when a client need changes. - Travel industry background, though it is not required.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote within the EU, or hybrid from Barcelona, Palma, Dublin, or Casablanca. - High autonomy after an initial onboarding period of a few weeks. - A stable engineering team that has worked together for two to three years. - Exposure to a variety of client requirements, where good ideas often become reusable features for other clients.
