Software Engineer II - Query Gateway

Role overview

A backend engineering position sits inside a data platform group that builds the foundation for telemetry ingestion, storage, and querying at petabyte scale. The role centers on a query gateway service that processes millions of messages per second across a multi-region, multi-cloud, multi-tenant environment. Engineers share pager responsibility and operate under a DevOps model where the team builds and runs its own services.

Responsibilities

- Own the query gateway stack end to end, including scalability, availability, and reliability - Collaborate through cross-functional working groups with AI, visualization, and data processing teams - Design, build, and maintain distributed Java services that support petabyte-scale infrastructure - Investigate and resolve critical performance, availability, and resilience issues in a distributed database - Participate in an on-call rotation, prioritizing work that keeps production incidents quiet - Operate within an agile workflow that emphasizes automated delivery and operational readiness

Requirements

- 3+ years of collaborative software development experience - Solid foundation in computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and modern software design methods - Demonstrated ownership mindset over code quality and commitments - Strong command-line skills and ability to debug broken systems directly - Proficiency in Java, or equivalent object-oriented experience in languages such as C++ or C#

Nice to have

- Experience operating within a 24x7 SaaS business - Background or interest in database implementation, distributed systems, or query execution - Familiarity with observability tools and platforms - Hands-on work with public clouds such as AWS, Azure, or GCP - Container experience with Kubernetes or Docker - Track record of succeeding in asynchronous, geographically distributed teams spanning North America, Europe, and Asia
