Legal Engineer

Role overview

This position bridges legal practice and software engineering, focused on building trust in AI-driven legal technology. The Legal Engineer will define what "correct" looks like for legal AI outputs and design repeatable evaluation systems that improve product quality. It is an internal enablement role that partners with product, engineering, and design teams across the organization rather than being deployed to outside clients.

Responsibilities

- Design and implement evaluation frameworks, datasets, and software tools that measure and improve the legal accuracy of AI-powered products - Translate legal quality standards into repeatable, automated tests for non-deterministic systems - Advise product managers, engineers, and designers on legal accuracy across specifications, prompts, taxonomies, and user-facing copy - Build platforms and tooling that support ongoing legal quality assurance workflows - Investigate, prove out, and recommend methods to strengthen legal reasoning performance and unlock more value from customer data - Communicate clearly in both directions—explaining legal concepts to engineers and technical ideas to legal professionals

Requirements

- JD, LLB, or equivalent legal qualification, OR a bachelor's degree plus 3+ years working in legal practice, legal knowledge management, or legal operations - Hands-on experience building executable software systems that operate on legal data and improve legal workflows - Familiarity with structured data formats such as JSON, XML, and Markdown - Experience using agentic AI systems for both legal and software development tasks - Demonstrated ability to manage time, prioritize projects, and meet deadlines - Strong attention to detail

Nice to have

- Experience evaluating non-deterministic systems, including data curation and generation, grading, and evaluation metrics - Background building or improving agentic workflows for legal tasks - Knowledge of Computational Law techniques beyond machine learning - Familiarity with harness development and AI-assisted software development lifecycle practices - Full-stack software development experience
